How We Compare Sportsbooks

A plain-language explanation of our comparison process.

BritBetTop is an independent comparison platform. Our comparison process is editorially independent. Operators do not influence their scores or placement. We may earn affiliate commission from outbound links, but this does not affect our assessments.

Why a comparison process matters

There are many UK-facing sports betting operators. Choosing between them can be difficult, especially when every sportsbook uses similar marketing language. Our comparison process tries to cut through that and assess operators on factors that actually matter to punters — like how clearly their bet terms are written, how reliable in-play is, and whether their responsible gambling tools are easy to find.

Our step-by-step process

1

Check for a valid UK licence

Before anything else, we confirm that the operator holds a current UK Gambling Commission operating licence. Unlicensed operators are not included on this site under any circumstances.

2

Review the site as a punter would

We look at the operator's site directly — how it is structured, how account registration works, whether limit-setting tools are easy to find, and how straightforward navigating between sports markets is.

3

Assess sport coverage and markets

We check how deep the coverage runs across football, horse racing, tennis, cricket, and the other UK markets. We note in-play depth and whether features such as Cash Out are available.

4

Evaluate bet slip and mobile

We check how the bet slip behaves — accumulator handling, stake suggestions, errors. Then we look at how the site performs on mobile and whether a stable app is offered.

5

Assess responsible gambling visibility

We look at whether responsible gambling tools (deposit limits, loss limits, self-exclusion) are easy to locate and whether links to external support organisations are present.

6

Assign an editorial score

Based on all of the above, we assign a score from 1 to 10. Scores are not equal across operators — they reflect genuine differences in how operators present and operate their products.

What our ratings mean

Our editorial scores are expressed on a scale from 1 to 10. A score above 8 indicates an operator that performs well across most of our criteria. A score below 7 suggests notable limitations in one or more areas.

Scores are not official ratings. They are not issued by a regulator. They are our editorial view at the time of review and may not reflect recent changes to an operator's product. Always check the operator's current terms directly.

What we do not compare

We deliberately avoid making certain types of claims in our comparisons:

  • We do not claim one sportsbook is “the best” without qualification
  • We do not guarantee odds, market availability, or eligibility
  • We do not claim any operator pays out faster than another
  • We do not make claims about the likelihood of winning a bet
  • We do not represent that our scores are official regulatory assessments

How often are reviews updated?

We aim to review operators periodically and update content when significant changes occur. However, we cannot guarantee that information is up to date at all times. Operators can change their markets, odds, products, and terms without notice.

For the most accurate picture of any sportsbook, always check their own site before registering or placing a bet.
